What is World Investor Week?

World Investor Week 2017

World Investor Week is a global campaign promoted by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection.  During October 2-8, 2017, individual investors, investment professionals, teachers, parents, researchers, and other interested individuals, firms, regulators, and organizations are encouraged to make a special effort to promote investor education and, in particular, World Investor Week's key messages.

As part of World Investor Week, IOSCO securities regulators and supporters across the globe will provide a variety of activities, including launching investor-focused communications and services, promoting investor education initiatives, organizing workshops and conferences, and conducting local/national campaigns in their own jurisdictions.

The SEC (national coordinator), CFTC, FINRA and supporters are working together with interested government agencies, localities, and organizations to promote World Investor Week and its goals in the United States.

What are World Investor Week's key messages?

A smart investor:

  • Verifies that an investment professional is licensed.
  • Conducts research on a product before investing.
  • Assesses the impact of fees when choosing an investment.
  • Understands that risk exists in all investments.
  • Avoids "get rich quick" and "can't lose" schemes.
  • Recognizes the power of compound interest.
  • Recognizes the importance of diversification.
  • Plans for and invests according to his/her future needs and goals.
  • Recognizes the benefit of long-term, regular and diversified investment.

What can I do?

Some examples are below.  Feel free to share your ideas via social media or contact us at WIW@sec.gov

Individuals

  • Practice checking the background of an investment professional using Investor.gov or if you are working with an investment professional, conduct a real check. It's free and it will only take a few moments to find out if you're dealing with a registered investment professional.
  • Select a book with an investing theme for your next book club. And don't forget to talk about the book at your meeting!
  • Sign up to receive Investor Alerts and Bulletins by email or text.

Students

Background on the Rule of 72. The Rule of 72 is a great way to estimate how your investment will grow over time. Simply divide the number 72 by your investment's expected rate of return (interest rate). Assuming an expected rate of return of 9%, your investment will double in value about every 8 years (72 divided by 9 equals 8).

  • Review common investment fraud persuasion tactics, create your own confessional-type video, and share it via social media.

Parents

  • Start a conversation with your children about a personal finance topic each day, possibly at a family meal.  Share your best investing habits, your biggest failures, and how you aim to improve in the future.
  • Take a "snapshot" of your financial life. Have you identified your financial goals?
  • Use Investor.gov's Savings Goal Calculator to calculate how much money you need to contribute each month in order to meet a specific financial goal.
  • Read our Investor Bulletin: Ten Ways to Use Investor.gov.

Teachers

  • Incorporate one of World Investor Week's key messages into your student lesson plans during the week.
  • Order a classroom set of Saving and Investing for Students.
